I’m a 21 year old US citizen, and I’d like to work at Whistler Blackcomb in BC next winter. I know that the winter workforce is largely composed of employees from abroad, but I’m having a little difficulty understanding the process – Immigration Canada seems to make it clear that I’d need a letter of offer from the company to be given a visa and work permit, but Whistler Blackcomb says that it doesn’t issue letters of offer for seasonal employees. So… how do all of these people go about getting into Canada to work for the winter months?

Anyone who is in Canada on a student visa is entitled to work in order to pay tuition and related expenses. There are limitations though.

  1. A lot of those lifties, bartenders, etc. have working holiday visas. US citizens are not eligible because the US is not part of the working holiday program. AFAIK the nations that are signatories to working holiday visa treaties are Japan, Australia, Canada, UK, Australia, and NZ. I don’t know why the US doesn’t want to join.
